Buccaneer Days Celebrations' Report June 13, 2009
This year as part of the IYA celebrations, the Victoria Centre participated
in the Pirates Den, part of the Buccaneers Days celebrations. Though we had
participated last year at another community event, (Metchosin Day), we were not
sure what to expect as to the size of the crowd. We were told by the organizing
committee that we should expect around 500+ spectators. This estimate was right
on the mark (the GM counter registered 542). The GM number could have surpassed
600 quite easily had we stayed past 3:00 pm by which time we had put in a full
day.
The weather could not have been better for solar viewing. Though the Sun is
still in its hibernating phase, it certainly provided most interesting viewing
with the Ha filter. The prominences were all over its limb, particularly one of
significant size persisted all day. Normally I don't fancy "Go To" mounts for
the public night sky viewing, but what a difference they make during the day, as
there are only a few objects to view (Sun, Moon & Venus). Charles used his mount
for the solar telescope and Dave kept Venus in view all day. There were some
trying moments for Dave when his telescope was being used for a balancing act by
some of the spectators. I would have to make here a special note that he kept
his cool. Thanks Dave!
In spite of short notice it is very encouraging to know that the Victoria Centre
has so many dedicate volunteer who are willing to help when required. I would
like to thank Dave Bennett, Charles Banville, Kerry Conwright, Miles Waite,
Paul Dickson and Lauri Roche.
Thanks to Paul, the attached pictures provide a flavour of the crowd and general
excitement experienced by the participants. The most satisfying part of these
events is meeting people who are so interested in astronomy.
