Hi Everyone
Just a short report on the Island Star Party put on this past weekend by our
friends at the Cowichan Valley Starfinders.
This year's party was attended by more than 200 people who came to the party
site at the Victoria Fish and Game Club near the Malahat Summit between Victoria
and Duncan. Everyone enjoyed great food and great speakers, and a presentation
on the Solar System by Pal Virag, who made his Canada in Space Presentation at
the recent RASC GA. Many RASC members from the Victoria Centre were in
attendance at this event.
I was present for Friday night and Saturday night. Some pesky clouds hung around
on Friday night, but at about 2 a.m., just when Mars was well above the trees
and lower atmosphere, the clouds left us with very clear skies. Even in my small
telescope, I could clearly see Mars' polar cap. Those of us who stayed up late
had a great treat, looking at Mars and the usual array of faint fuzzies. There
were no clouds on Saturday or Sunday nights, so there was plenty of observing
done on those nights.
The same location will be the site of the Victoria Centre star party the weekend
of September 19 to 21.
